Abstract
Speech act is something uttered with the intention of not merely informing but also performing something. The so-called Illocutionary act within the concept of speech act is the one performed by the speakers through their utterances to make others or the hearers performing something. There are five classifications of illocutionary act including assertive, directive, commissive, declaration and expressive. The study concerns with the types of expressive illocutionary act and the context of situation where the expressive illocutionary act happens in The Little Mermaid 1989 movie. The study used theory by Searle (1979) about classifications of illocutionary act and theory from Halliday and Hasan (1985) about context of situation. The study used qualitative method to analyze the data. The data source is obtained from utterances which are produced by the characters in The Little Mermaid 1989 movie. The result shows expressive illocutionary acts are identified as many as 22 utterances whether in direct and indirect speech act. Furthermore, the study divided it into six types of expressive illocutionary act, they are apologizing (5), thanking (3), congratulating (3), wishing (3), attitude (6), and greeting (2).
