Abstract

This study focused on the code switching phenomena found in selected tweets on Twitter account of Alexander Thian @aMrazing. This study aimed to identify the types of code switching and analyzed the reasons of code switching used by Alexander Thian in his tweets. Classification of code switching proposed by Romaine (1995) and theory from Hoffman (1991) which concerns about reasons of code switching were used as guidance to achieve the goals. This study used library research for data collection process and applied qualitative method to analyze the problems that had been identified. The study summarized that all types and reasons were found in the data. Majority of the data were classified as inter-sentential switching that found in 37 data or 57% occurrences; followed by intra-sentential and tag switching. This finding indicated that Alexander Thian has mastered a high level of bilingualism. Furthermore, the most dominant reason for Alexander Thian to switch the codes in Twitter was because of his intention of clarifying the speech content for his followers as the interlocutors due to the characters limitation rules in Twitter. The major reason had 41.6% occurrences or found in 27 data. Lastly, quoting for somebody else became the reason that had the least occurrences, it only had 3% occurrences.
