A SYNTACTICAL ANALYSIS OF COMPOUND SENTENCE FOUND IN THE BUCKET LIST STORY ON WATTPAD BY NEVE ADAMS

A compound sentence is a sentence which consists of two or more independent clauses joined together by a coordinate conjunction. This study is focused on compound sentence found in The Bucket List Story on Wattpad by Neve Adams. There are two aims which are conducted in this study, those are (1) to find out the types of coordination use in compound sentences found in The Bucket List Story on Wattpad by Neve Adams and (2) to analyze the constituent structure of compound sentences found in The Bucket List Story on Wattpad by Neve Adams. Qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. The data were analyzed by using the theory about types of coordination proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum (1973) and the theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) about the constituent structure through the tree diagram. The analysis was presented in formal and informal method. Formal method was applied through the table to calculate the number between syndetic and asyndetic coordination and the tree diagram in constructing the structure of compound sentences. Informal method was applied through word explanation to describe about syntactical categories of a compound sentence. The result of this study showed that there are one hundred and ten (110) sentences indicates as compound sentence that used a different coordination found in The Bucket List Story on Wattpad by Neve Adams, those are compound sentences using syndetic coordination marked by and, but, or, and so with 78 data, compound sentences that used asyndetic coordination marked by comma (,) and semicolon (;) with 24 data and compound sentences that used both syndetic and asyndetic coordination which used combination from both of those coordination with 9 data. The type of constituent structure generally found, S = Left most S + Coordinator + Right most S. There are also found some ellipsis word in the constituent structure, such as the ellipsis of noun, verb and auxiliary.
