Abstract
Agung Yohanes Kapistrano. 2022. Figurative Language Used in the Song Lyric of John Legend’s Album “Bigger Love”. English Study Program Faculty of Foreign Languages Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Supervisor: Dr. Desak Putu Eka Pratiwi, S.S., M., Hum. Co-supervisor: I Gusti Ayu Vina Widiadnya Putri S.S., M., Hum Figurative language is often used in a song. This helps the song writer to express his feeling by using some variant of languages and make the song sounds interesting. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and to analyze the meaning of the figurative language used in John Legend’s song lyrics. The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) used to identify the types of figurative language and theory proposed by Leech (1974) used to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The result shows there are 6 types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of John Legend's album "Bigger Love". They are; simile, metaphor, Personification, Synecdoche, metonymy, Hyperbole, and Paradox. There were found 21 sentences identified using those seven types of figurative language such as; 6 of simile (28, 86 %), 2 of metaphor (9, 52 %), 3 of Personification (14, 43 %), 1 of Synecdoche (4, 76%), 8 of Hyperbole (38, 81 %), and 1 of paradox (4, 76 %). The result shows there are two types of meaning used in the song lyrics of John Legend's album "Bigger Love", such are; connotative meaning and conceptual meaning. It can be indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the song lyrics is hyperbole. The meaning of figurative language is also stated clearly.
