Abstract

The present research aims at figuring out the improvement of writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Petang through ESA. ESA is a technique of teaching writing which have three elements, such as: Engage, Study and Activate. The undertaking of the research was mainly based on the preliminary study. The subjects were the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Petang in academic year 2021/2022 that consisted of 32 subjects. The results showed that most of the subjects’ writing skill was still low. Besides, the present research was intended to know whether or not the writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Petang can be improved through ESA. To achieve the objective, the researcher conducted classroom action research that was done in two cycles. Furthermore, the required data were obtained by administering the research instruments: tests and a questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed by comparing the pretest and post-tests, which showed significant improvements in the subjects’ mean scores. Furthermore, the questionnaire results showed that the subjects positively responded the implementation of ESA in teaching writing. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Petang in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through ESA.
