Abstract

The research aims to find out and classify the types of code-switching found in novel The Paragon Plan by Aranindy and to analyze the reasons of code-switching found in novel The Paragon Plan by Aranindy. The data were taken from The Paragon Plan Novel written by Aranindy in 2021 which consists of 392 pages. The novel was published in 2021 by PT. Gramedia Pustaka Utama. In collecting data, observation method was used. Therefore, the data were collected by following steps, those are: reading, underlining, taking note, classifying the types and reasons of code switching that are found in the novel. There are two approaches to conveying the results of data analysis: the formal method and the informal method. In analyzing the data, descriptive qualitative method ware used. In this study the data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) to analyzed the types of code-switching. Meanwhile, the reasons for code-switching were analyze based on the theory proposed by Hoffman (199). This study found 125 instances of code-switching, those are 24 (19,2%) instances of tag switching, 42 (33,6%) of inter-sentential switching, and 59 occurrences of intra-sentential switching (47,2%). The reasons of code-switching in this study shows that instances of talking about particular topic were found in 19 (15,2%), instance of quoting somebody else were found in 13 (10,4%), instances of being emphatic about something were found 31 (24,8%), interjection were found in 13 instances (10,4%), repetition used for clarification accounted for 9 instances (7,2%), intention of clarifying speech content for interlocutor were found in 21 instances (16,8%) and finally, expressing group identity were found in 19 instances (15,2%).
