Abstract

The study is mainly aimed at finding out the type of figurative language and the meaning of figurative language in Christina Perry song lyrics. The data source is Desire album by Christina Perry. To answer the first problem, this study used theory Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) classified figurative language into ten types namely simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, metonymy, synecdoche, paradox, irony, dead metaphor, and allusion. Meanwhile to answer the second problem the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) was used. There are 15 ten song lyrics by Christina Perry analyzed in this study. This study used qualitative descriptive analysis. The analysis was started by continuously listening to the song by Christina Perry. Afterward, the researcher read the lyrics of the selected song, wrote down the figurative language expression and categorized it into types of figurative language. Based on the analysis, the researcher found the following types of figurative language in Christina Perry song lyrics. There are 2 simile, 4 metaphor, 8 personification, 9 hyperbole. The most dominant type of figurative language occurs in the songs is a personification 8 data found (34,7%) and hyperbole by 9 data found (or (39,1%).
