AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG WORDS USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN “DO REVENGE” MOVIE

The study aims at finding the types of slang words to analyze meaning of the slang words found in the movie “Do Revenge”. This study has applied the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) classifying slang into primary and secondary, and the theory of meaning by Leech (1981). In analyzing the data, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The result of the study found that there were 21 Slang words which 16 (76%) was classified as primary slang and 5 (24%) as secondary slang. There were total of 21 data of type of meaning found in the “Do Revenge” movie. Therefore, it can be seen that not all of types of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) found. Only five types, i.e. social meaning 9 data (42%), affective meaning 5 data (23%), conceptual meaning 3 data (14%), collocative meaning 1 datum (8%), and connotative meaning 3 data (14%). Moreover, the most dominant type of slang words in this study was primary slang which means they are often used in specific combinations or phrases to convey a particular idiomatic sense.
