The Correlation between Self-confidence and Speaking Skill of the Seventh-Grade Students of SMPN 4 Sukawati in the Academic Year 2023/2024

Self-confidence is an asset for students to dare to express their own ideas. If students are confident in speaking English, they can speak more fluently. The seventh-grade students of SMPN.4 Sukawati, said that when they spoke English, they felt nervous and afraid of getting negative responses from teachers and friends when they made mistakes and felt less confident in their abilities. This research aimed to determine how students’ self-confidence influenced the speaking skills of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 4 Sukawati. The population of this study was 180 students in seventh grade students in the academic year 2023/2024. The sample of this study was 60 students. They were chosen by random sampling technique. The data were collected by employing a self-confidence questionnaire and speaking performance. The obtained data were analyzed by investigating the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking test scores which was done by utilizing IBM SPSS Statistic 25.0. Furthermore, it was found out the result of the correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking skill was 0.449. It implies that there was a significant correlation between students’ self-confidence and speaking skills of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 4 Sukawati in the academic year 2023/2024. In conclusion, the positive hypothesis is accepted.
