The Correlation Between Motivation and Speaking Ability of The Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 4 Sukawati in The Academic Year 2023/2024

This present study was designed as ex-post facto research to find out the correlation between motivation and speaking ability of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Sukawati in the academic year 2023/2024. The variables of this present study were motivation as variable X and speaking ability as variable Y. The population were the eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Sukawati.The technique of choosing the samples were used cluster sampling with lottery system and the researcher takes 10% of 244 students population which taken 60 samples. The data which were needed for this research was collected by administering questionnaire about motivation and speaking tests as the research instruments. The results of normality and homogeneity test showed the two research variables data were normal and homogenous. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. The data analysis results showed that the students’ motivation correlated with their speaking ability. The students who had good motivation could achieve much better achievement in speaking recount monologue. To sum up, the present research findings finally confirmed the hypothesis that there was a significant correlation between motivation and speaking ability of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Sukawati in academic year 2023/2024.
