Abstract

This study aimed at figuring out the implementation of ESA combined with picture to improve writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024. ESA combined with picture is a technique of teaching writing in this study which has three elements, such as: Engage, Study, and Activate. The undertaking of the research was mainly based on the preliminary study. The subject were the seventh-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024. There were 32 subjects which consist of 16 females and 16 males. The design was classroom action research design. The research is carried out through implementation of ESA combined with picture in two cycle and the obtained data was analyzed qualitatively from the test and questionnaire. The result showed there was significant improvement of the subjects’ skill in writing descriptive text, pre cycle (46.94) up to cycle I (76.69) then, it improved in cycle II (86.19). In addition, the questionnaire proved that the subjects’ response toward the implementation of ESA combined with picture was positive during the teachinglearning process. In conclusion, the study showed that writing skill of the seventhgrade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through ESA combined with picture.
