Improving Speaking Skill of the EighthGrade Students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the Academic Year 2023/2024 Through Three-Step Interview

This study aimed to figure out the implementation of Three-Step Interview to improve the speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024. Three-Step Interview is a cooperative learning technique that helps students develop their speaking while learning from the ideas and thinking of their classmates. The undertaking of the researcher was mainly based on the preliminary study. The subject was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024 which consisted of 32 students covers 14 males and 18 females. The design of this study was classroom action research and the research was carried out by implementing Three-Step Interview in two cycles. The obtained data was analyzed qualitatively from the test and questionnaire. The result showed there was a significant improvement in the subjects’ skill in performing a short conversation. The data showed that the mean score of pre-cycle was 56.88, up to cycle I was 73.28, and then it was improved in cycle II was 83.16. In addition, the questionnaire proved that the subjects’ response toward the implementation of the Three-Step Interview was positive during the teachinglearning process. Based on the data, the total percentage of SA was 67.40%, the total of A was 28.34, the total of U was 4.12%, the total of D was 0.14%, and the SD was 0%. To sum up, this study showed that the speaking skill of the eighthgrade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in the academic year 2023/2024 could be improved through Three-Step Interview
