FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN THE SONG LYRICS OF JOHN LEGEND SELECTED ALBUM

This study was conducted in following objectives are to find out the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of John Legend selected album and to find out the types of figurative meaning in John Legend’s song lyrics. To answer the research problems the theory that proposed by Davis (2016) used to analyze the types of figurative language and Leech (1981) theory to find out the types of
meaning in John Legend’s song lyrics. Based on the result of discussion, there were 5 types of figurative language found and 5 types of meaning presented in the formal method that shown by the use of table percentage and descriptive paragraph. These 5 types were 16% of metaphor, 29% of simile, 3% of irony, 42% of hyperbole and 11% of metonymy with the types of hyperbole mostly found in the song lyrics.
Furthermore, the 5 types of meaning were 8% of conceptual meaning, 45% of connotative meaning, 42% of affective meaning, 3% of social meaning and 3% of reflected meaning with the types of connotative meaning was mostly performed.
