Abstract

The present study which made use of correlation research design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability of the eighth-grade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022. The samples of the research consisted of 50 students from 145 eighth-grade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum in academic year 2021/2022 which were chosen by applying random sampling technique with lottery system. The data were collected through administering the research instruments which were in the form of a sentence writing test and paragraph construction test. The results of normality and homogeneity test showed the two research variables data were normal and homogenous. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. The results of the data analysis showed that the students’ grammar mastery correlated with their writing ability. The students who had good grammar knowledge could achieve better achievement in writing paragraph. To sum up, the research findings confirmed that there was a significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability of the eighthgrade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022.
