Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Sila Dharma in academic year 2021/2022. The samples under the study were 40 students of the eighth grade students of SMP Sila Dharma that were chosen by using random sampling method with lottery system. The design was correlation research, the writer used two instruments which were reading test of reading skill and vocabulary test for vocabulary mastery. The result showed, when the students had high vocabulary mastery their reading comprehension was good, while when the student had low vocabulary mastery their reading comprehension was not good. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 26.0 that consist of Normality test, Homogeneity test, Pearson Product moment and T-testing. The hypothesis was significantly accepted. Based on the data analysis, it showed that there is a high, significant and positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of of eighth grade students of SMP Sila Dharma in academic year 2021/2022. Therefore, it answered the research question that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension.
