Abstract

The present study which made use of an ex-post facto research with correlation design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between motivation and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in academic year 2021/2022. The samples of the research consisted of 60 students which were chosen by means of cluster sampling method with lottery system. The data were collected through administering the research instruments which were in the form of structured questionnaire and short answer task. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using Pre-requisite Analysis and Hypothesis Testing. The result of homogeneity was 0.156. It meant the significance value was higher than 0.05. While the result normality test motivation was a figure of 0.256 and it was higher than 0.05: besides, for reading comprehension, it can be seen on the significance value was 0.109, which was higher than 0.05. The next analysis could be done by using Pearson Product-moment correlation and T-test. The result of the Pearson Product-moment correlation showed that the correlation coefficient was 0.637, which means that the correlation between two variables were in moderate level. In addition, the results of the data analysis clearly revealed the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there is significant correlation between motivation and reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in academic year 2021/2022.
