Abstract

This study was intended to find out the correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability in writing descriptive text. The subjects of the research waseighth grade students of SMP N 2 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022. The present correlation study research design was then carried out. The instrument used to collect the data were test. The test were grammar mastery test used simple present tense and writing ability test used descriptive text. The collected data was analyzed by using SPSS Program 25.0 for windows. Paired sample t-test is the significance 2-tailed value from students’ grammar mastery and students’ writing ability was .000. The results showed that the t-testing significance store is had relatively equal variances because the significance is lower than 0.05. The result of calculating correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ writing ability was r = 0.807, based on the result, it can be concluded as a high correlation because 0.807 is higher than 0.800, so there is a significant correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022.
