Abstract

One of the success indicators of learning English in junior high school is to write the ideas, information, or feeling by means of functional purposes. Therefore, the application of an appropriate teaching method is required. The study attempted to investigate whether the writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Mengwi in the academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through think pair share. The subjects consisted of 30 students; 15 males and 15 females. The design was classroom action research. It was done in two cycles and each cycle consisted of two sessions. The findings of the study revealed that the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph has increased after the think pair share is applied in teaching-learning process. Data showed that there were significant improvements of the subjects’ mean scores from the pre-test and post-tests. The mean score of the pre-test was 59.03, post-test I was 71.03, and post-test II was 83.56. To gain the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle, and the result showed 95% of the subjects positively agreed on the implementation of think pair share in improving writing skill. It could be concluded that writing skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Mengwi in the academic year 2021/2022 could be improved through think pair share.
