Abstract

In learning English, reading is the process of understanding and interpreting written text or information. Most junior high school students have problems in reading word, and phrases to understand the meaning conveyed by the author. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the level of reading ability of seventhgrade students at SMPN 14 Denpasar in the 2023/2024 school year can be improved by Listen-Read-Discuss strategy through behavioral studies in the classroom. To achieve the purpose of this study, the researcher's activities consisted of pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, and questionnaires. The pre-test results clearly showed a low level of reading ability with an average score of 63. The researcher then applied Listen-Read-discuss strategy in order to improve the skills being tested. The posttest was conducted through Listen-Read-Discuss strategy at the end of each cycle. In the post-test of Cycle I and Cycle II the results improved significantly with an average score of 85. and 91. Another implication was that cycle II was more effective than cycle I. In addition, the researcher completed a questionnaire at the end of Cycle II to collect additional supporting data. The results showed that students' motivation and attitude changed positively after Listen-Read-Discuss was implemented. In summary, this classroom action research shows that the reading viii text skills of grade VII students at SMPN 14 Denpasar can be improved through Listen-Read-Discuss strategy for the academic year 2023/2024.
