Abstract

The objective of this study was intended to find out to whether the implementation of role play can improve speaking ability of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2024. Role play is as a teaching strategy used by English teachers in teaching speaking in which the teacher begins to give situations and roles and students are asked to make groups consisting of students. Role play strategy was expected to improve students’ speaking ability. The subjects were the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2041. There were 35 subjects which consist of 19 males and 16 females. The design was classroom action research design. The research was carried out through the use of role play strategy in two cycles and the obtained data was analyzed quantitatively from the pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2 then qualitatively from the questionnaire. In short, the study showed that the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through role play strategy.
