Abstract

In learning English, reading is the process of understanding and interpreting written text or information. Most junior high school students have problems in reading word, and phrases to understand the meaning conveyed by the author. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the level of reading ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Pelangi Dharma Nusantara in the 2023/2024 school year can be improved by Question-Answer-Relationship strategy through behavioral studies in the classroom. To achieve the purpose of this study, the researcher's activities consisted of pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, and questionnaires. The pre-test results clearly showed a low level of reading ability with an average score of 58.36. The researcher then applied Listen-Read-discuss strategy in order to improve the skills being tested. The post-test was conducted through Question-Answer-Relationship strategy at the end of each cycle. In the post-test of Cycle I and Cycle II the results improved significantly with an average score of 80.36 and 90.95. Another implication was that cycle II was more effective than cycle I. In addition, the researcher completed a questionnaire at the end of Cycle II to collect additional supporting data. The results showed that students' motivation andattitude changed positively after Question-Answer-Relationship was xi implemented. In summary, this classroom action research shows that the reading text skills of grade VIII students at SMP Pelangi Dharma Nusantara can be improved through Question-Answer-Relationship strategy for the academic year 2023/2024.
