Improving Writing Skill of the Seventh-grade Students of SMP Dwijendra Denpasar in the Academic Year 2023/2024 Through ESA Combined with Picture

Writing is a way to produce language and express ideas, feeling, and opinions using writing paragraph. The process of writing is not only developing the students’ paragraph writing skills but also their creativity. However, there are several problems experienced by students in learning English, including students’ comprehension, create and elaborate idea, punctuation, vocabulary, and grammatical error. The present research objective was mainly intended to find out whether speaking skill of the seventh-grade students of SMP Dwijendra Denpasar in the academic year 2023/2024 could be improved through ESA combined with picture. The present study used the classroom action research design that was conducted in two cycles. The required data were collected by administering research instruments: picture constructing task and a structured questionnaire. After the cyclical research processes, it was found that ESA combined with picture was appropriate teaching technique to improve the subjects’ writing skill, especially in constructing a descriptive paragraph. It could be seen from the results of the pretest, post-test 1 and post-test 2, which showed significant improvement in the subjects’ writing skill. Furthermore, it was supported by the structured questionnaire, which showed positive responses to the implementation of ESA combined with picture. It can be concluded that writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMP Dwijendra Denpasar could be improved by implementing ESA combined with picture.
