Abstract

This research explores the realm of illocutionary acts in the context of the movie. Illocutionary acts, a fundamental concept in pragmatics, refer to the intentions or communicative functions behind a speaker's utterance. The study aims to address two main problems: identifying the types of illocutionary acts present in the movie and examining how the protagonist's illocutionary acts function within the narrative. Theoretical frameworks developed by Searle (1979) and Leech (1983) are employed for categorization and analysis. The data source is the movie Kissing Booth 3, chosen for its release in 2021 and its rich depiction of young adult relationships. This study employed qualitative descriptive methods to assess the data. Data collection involves watching the movie, noting illocutionary acts, and classifying them. The study concludes with an analysis of 89 illocutionary acts, revealing expressive acts as predominant. Convivial functions, associated with social goals, were most frequent. The absence of declarative acts suggests a preference for actions over factual statements in character dialogues. The study provides insights for researchers and scriptwriters, emphasizing the importance of context in analyses and suggesting ways scriptwriters can enhance film dialogues through the dynamic use of illocutionary acts.
