Abstract

This research intended to find out the types of figurative language in “Songs For The Drunk And The Broken Hearted” album. Figurative languages are languages that use figures of speech, not literal meanings. This research analyzed the figurative language found in the song lyrics of Passenger’s Song for the Drunk and Broken Hearted album and there are simile, methapor, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole, and allusion. The connotative meaning of each figurative language is also identified. The conclusion of this research is there are some kinds of figurative language found in Passenger’s Song for the Drunk and Broken Hearted album. The data was presented descriptively and analyzed based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Renninger (1974) and theory of meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1974). There are 32 lyrics that contain figurative languages. In analyzed the meaning the writer found that there is connotative meaning used in the figurative lyrics. The dominant type of figurative language is metaphor and the dominantly used meaning is connotative meaning.
