Abstract

Speaking is a key to communication as an interactive process of developing meaning that involves producing information. In addition, speaking seems to be one of the most challenging skills that students can acquire since it requires. Self-esteem is one psychological factor that represents consideration of individuals’ belief that they are worthy, competent, and able to do anything. Therefore, self-esteem is the internal factor that influences students' performance in speaking skills. The primary goal of this study is to find the correlation between self-esteem and speaking skill. The subject in this study is the seventh-grade students of SMPN 4 Denpasar in the academic year 2023/2024. The sample consisted of 50 students from the seventhgrade. The researchers used two tests to collect data namely descriptive monologue test, and questionnaires. The test that was administered in this study was performing a short descriptive monologue in the form of descriptive text to get the data of students’ speaking skill. The researcher used the questionnaire to measure the students' self-esteem in speaking.
