The Hierarchy of Needs as Reflected on the Characterization of the Main Character in The Danish Girl Movie

This study focuses on the analysis of characterization and the hierarchy of needs of the main character in The Danish Girl movie. The aims of this study are to find out the main character's characterization and to analyze the hierarchy of needs as reflected on the characterization of The Danish Girl movie. The collecting data were done through the observation method, which applied note-taking technique to find out, identify, and classify the data. The data were analyzed by using the theory from Edward Harell Jones (1968) to find out the characterization and the theory from Abraham Maslow (1943) to find the hierarchy of needs of the main character. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to conduct a clear and wellorganized description of the problems which is identified. The finding presentation of this study is presented through formal and informal methods using tables, figures, and descriptions through sentences. This study's result reveals that the main character's characterization and the hierarchy of needs analysis were found in The Danish Girl movie. Based on the data collected, there are 31 data found. The study results showed that the characterization of the main character changes from the beginning to the end of the movie, this happens because the main character has a strong ambition to become a woman. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the main character is able to fulfill the four needs namely psychological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, and esteem needs but the main character failed to achieve the highest need namely self-actualization needs.
