Abstract

This study concerned with semiotic signs and explained the meaning of
verbal and nonverbal signs that occur in the horror movie posters which were used
as the data source. The data were taken from three horror movie posters. Those
movie posters contain verbal and nonverbal signs which are interesting to analyze.
This study aimed to answer two problems of study, those are the types of verbal
and nonverbal signs in the movie posters, and their meaning. This study used the
theory of semiotics by Saussure (1959), theory of meaning by Barthes (1964), and
theory of color by Cerrato (2012). Descriptive qualitative method was used to
analyze the data in this study. As the result, those horror movie posters showed the
verbal and nonverbal signs to attract audience to watch the movie. The verbal signs
are all in the form of the text or writing meanwhile the nonverbal signs consists of
color, background, symbol, image, and etc. From the data, it was found that all the
horror movie posters consisted with verbal and nonverbal signs, that used to make
the readers and the audience were interested to watch that movie.
