Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of illocutionary acts used by the
judges in America's Got Talent 2021 based on theory proposed by Searle (1979),
and to identify the function of illocutionary acts based on the theory of Leech
(1983). This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data and
quantitative method to find out about the frequency of type that implied in the data.
This study used ten contestants and four judges that happened during America's Got
Talent's audition season 16th. The result of this analysis shows that there are 5 types
of illocutionary acts found in the utterances of the conversation between the Judges
and contestants of America's Got Talent 2021. There are expressive, directive,
commissive, assertive, and declarative illocutionary acts. Based on the data,
expressive have the highest frequency of occurrence 23 utterances or (48,9%). It is
followed by directive occurrence is 8 utterances or (17,6%), commissive which
occurrence is 7 utterances or (14,7%), assertive which the occurrence is 6 utterances
or (12,6%) and declarative which the occurrence is 3 utterances or (6,2%).
Moreover, the function of illocutionary act found on the conversation between the
Judges and contestants, in their utterances based on the result found 4 functions of
illocutionary acts. There are convivial, collaborative, competitive and conflictive
functions. The function of illocutionary acts found most in this category was
convivial function.
