An Analysis of Idiomatic Expressions Found in Ariana Grande's Song Lyrics of the Album Positions

This study aims to analyze the idiomatic expression types and the meaning of the
idiomatic expression in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics in the Positions album. This study
used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, meaning that the collected
data were analyzed by describing the types and meanings of idiomatic expressions. The
data of this study were analyzed with the theory of type of idiomatic expressions by
McCarthy and O’Dell (2010: 22-32) and the theory of meaning by Leech (1981). The
result of this study showed that there are six types of idiomatic expressions found in
Ariana Grande’s Positions album, and the total data is 22 idioms. There were Similes
with 5 data (22,8%), followed by Binomials with 3 data (13,6%), Euphemisms with 3
data (13,6%), Clichés with 7 data (31,8%), Fixed statements with 3 data (13,6%), and
Other languages with 1 data (4,6%). The meaning of idiomatic expressions found 3
Conceptual meanings, 15 Connotative meanings, 1 Affective meaning, and 3 Thematic
meanings. Moreover, no Collocative, Reflected, and Social meanings were found during
the analysis.
