Abstract

The title of this thesis is “Figurative Language Used in Olivia Rodrigo Album Song Lyrics “Sour”. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and analyse the meaning of the figurative language used in Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics. The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) to clasify kinds of figurative language. The second theory by Leech (1974) was used to analyse the meaning of the songs lyrics. Based on the result of discussion, there were 15 data of figurative language were found in song lyrics by Olivia Rodrigo. There are 4 types of figurative language used in the song lyrics, they are: 3 of simile (20%), 1 of personification (6,66%), 8 of hyperbole (53,33%), 3 of irony (20%), with the types of hyperbole mostly found in the song lyrics. Furthermore, the types of meaning were found, such as: 9 of connotative (60%), 6 of affective (40%). Most of the figurative language that found is belong to connotative meaning because there is ordinary meaning found reminds that figurative language is about style of language and it has alot of variety language when saying something
