Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the discourse text structure of The New York Times news article (2) to analyse the power of discourse occurrence in The New York Times news article. The data source of this study is The New York Times news article written by Richard C. Paddock. The data were collected by utilizing note taking technique and descriptively analysed based on Van Dijk’s discourse model analysis (1997); text structure, social cognition, and social context. The finding shows that text structure is divided into macrostructure (main topic), superstructure (five subtopics), whereas microstructure consists of: semantic (background, goal, detail, presupposition, and numerical), syntactical (sentence form, coherence, and pronouns), and rhetoric (graphic and figurative languages). Meanwhile, social cognition consists of person scheme (role of Richard C. Paddock as the journalist), self-scheme (credibility of The New York Times as news company), and role scheme (Indonesian government as stakeholder, local tourism workers and environmentalist as civilian). Moreover, social context contains the problems that lead to the writing of the news article and the resolution for the problem after the writing of the news article
