Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Derivational Affixes in Selected Articles of Tempo English Magazine”. It aimsto identify the type and the process of forming new words of derivational affixes that are found in selected articles of Tempo English Magazine. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and used two theories, theory from Katamba (1993) as the main theory and Lieber (2009) as supporting theory. From the total data there are From the total data there are 25 (12%) words containing derivational prefix which are prefix: in- 5 (2,3%) data, un�10 (4,6%) data, dis- 1 (0,5%) data and re- 9 (4,1%) and 193 (89%) words containing derivational suffix, the derivational suffix are: -ship with 7 (3,2%) data, -ness with 3 (1,4%) data, -ity with 17 (7,8%) data, -ment with 27 (12,4%) data, -al with 28 (12,8%) data, -er with 21 (9,6%) data, -less with 2 (0,9%) data, -ic with 11 (5,0%) data, -ly with 69 (31,7%) data and suffix -ing with 8 (3,7%). As the result, derivational suffix is the mostly used which has 193 data from 210 data from all seventeen articles. It is followed by derivational prefix that has 25 data from 210. The words those used suffix -ly from derivational suffix which has 69 (31,7%) data from 210 data in this study are the most commonly used in the Tempo English Magazine
