An Analysis of Figurative Language in Meghan Trainor Selected Song Lyrics

This study is aimed at analyzing figurative language found in Meghan Trainor's selected song lyrics. The objectives of this research are to find out types of figurative language in Meghan Trainor selected song lyrics and to identify the meaning of figurative language found in Meghan Trainor selected song lyrics. There are two theories that used in this research. The first theory is proposed by Perrine (1969) to find out the types of figurative language and the second theory is proposed by Leech (1981) to find out the meaning of figurative language. This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The result of this analysis found that there are 25 data of figurative language. There were found 8 data of Hyperboles (32%), 5 data of Similes (20%), 4 data of Metaphors (16%), 4 data of Metonymy (16%), 2 data of Personifications (8%), 1 data of Irony (4%) and 1 data of Allusion (4%). Based on the result the types that dominantly used is Hyperbole. Meanwhile the meaning of figurative language found were only 2 of 7 types of meaning there are connotative meaning and affective meaning.
