Abstract

Understanding the crucial role of grammar when establishing a recount text is really important. This study aimed to examine the errors of grammatical aspects and analyze the causes of errors in writing recount text made by the twelfth-grade students at SMK Swakarsa Ruteng. This study is designed as a field research study. It described the types of errors and examined their causes using a descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from the recount paragraphs written by the students. These recount paragraphs were collected with the help of the English teachers at SMK Swakarsa Ruteng. Formal and informal methods then used to analyze the errors and cause of errors in those paragraphs. There are two theories used to support this study namely Dulay's (1982) theory on types of grammatical errors, and Norish’s (1983) theory on cause of grammatical errors. There were 42 students’ recount texts which were the source data of this research. The result of the study discovered that 418 errors contained grammatical errors based on Dulay. They are omission (29.90%), addition (14.84%), misformation (46.89%), and misordering (8.37%). Regarding the cause of errors, there are carelessness (60.21%), translation (8.53%), and first language interference (31.26%). Based on the result, misformation became the highest of grammatical errors, and carelessness became the highest cause of errors.
