Abstract

This research aimed to find out the abilities and difficulties in speaking English of the third-semester academic 2021/2022 students in the English study program faculty of foreign languages at Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. This research focused on students’ speaking ability. This research was a descriptive quantitative. This research used the purposive sampling technique. The sample of the research was 40 students of third-semester students in the English study program faculty of foreign languages at Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. The researcher used speaking test and interview as instrument of research. This research was conducted via classroom by recording the students’ videos of presenting a presentation. Then, the researcher and inter-rater assessed their speaking ability. Therefore, the results of this research were that the students’ speaking ability had 20 students categorized as good level, 20 students categorized as average level, and there is no students categorized as excellent, fair, and poor level. For the students’ difficulties they had grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, comprehensibility and the most difficult aspect was grammar and fluency. Eventually, it could be summed up that the students’ speaking ability is overall good and the most difficulty encountered by students is grammar and fluency aspects.
