Abstract

This study analyzes the idiom used in the song lyrics of selected songs of Sam Smith. The song writer plays words and language to create attraction and distinctiveness towards the lyric of the song. Idiom has the ability to be more impactful for the readers. This study is aimed at finding out types of idiom found on selected songs on Sam Smith and meaning idioms in selected songs on Sam Smith. The data was analyzed based on the theory of idiom proposed by Palmer (1974) and theory of Meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1974).This study showed that all the type of idioms by Palmer occured in selected songs. The Partial Idioms occured the most by 19 (73%) , followed by Phrasal Verb by 5 (20%) and Prepositional Verb by 2 (7%). Partial idiom dominan in selected songs of Sam Smith, partial idiom means word has special meaning from Sam Smith song can found many idiom with their own special meaning.. And otherwise in analyzing the contextual meaning, this study found some types of meaning used in song lyrics: connotative meaning, thematic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and stylistic meaning. The data were presented descriptively and formally by using some tables.
