Abstract

This study concerns the analysis of figurative language in selected song lyrics by Melanie Martinez in the album “Portals”. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of figurative language and to identify the meaning of figurative language. This study is expected to obtain the result that would be useful for the readers especially in understanding types of figurative language and their meaning. The data were taken from selected song lyrics of Melanie Martinez in the album “Portals”. The data were collected by observation method. The research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Perrine (1992) and theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981). The result shows that there are seven types of figurative language used in selected song’s lyrics of Melanie Martinez in the album “Portals”, such as 6 data of simile, 1 data of personification, 3 data of hyperbole, 6 data of metaphor, 1 data of irony, 1 data of imagery, 1 data of symbols. It can be seen that the most dominant type of figurative language in the song lyrics is hyperbole. It can be concluded that figurative language has important roles in creating the song lyrics. Using figurative language makes the song interesting and can attract the listeners to listen to the song. There were two types of meanings focused in analyzing the data. There are conceptual meaning and connotative meaning.
