Abstract

Comics are pictures that are juxtaposed with other pictures sequentially and made into a story. The word onomatopoeia is used to build stories and also for visual effects in comic strips. This research investigates the onomatopoeia that appears in Avatar Comics “The Last Airbander-North and South” #1 to #3. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data collection is carried out by observation through several stages, such as reading comics, recording onomatopoeia words contained in comics, classifying onomatopoeia according to its type, and analyzing the meaning of onomatopoeia. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of onomatopoeia found in comics, namely Direct Onomatopoeia of 115 (86%), Associative Onomatopoeia of 4 (3%), and Exemplary Onomatopoeia of 15 (11%). The meaning of the onomatopoeia words contained in the comic can be differentiated into 2 meanings, including abstract meaning and contextual meaning. Abstract meaning is related to the meaning of a word, phrase, or sentence in the dictionary and contextual meaning is the meaning of a word in a particular situation and context. and becomes a reason, assumption, and explanation of other functions of a context.
