Abstract

This study is concerned with the figurative language used in selected songs by Niki Zefanya. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics and analyze the meaning found in the song conveyed by the singer in the lyrics. The method used in this study is a qualitative method and it was done through observation which was listening to the song, reading the lyric, and taking notes the lyrics that showed the type of figurative language contained in the selected song. In analyzing the data and classifying each type, this study applies the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) and uses the theory from Leech (1981) to analyze meaning. The result of the study revealed there are 7 types of figurative language with 18 data as the total. They are: 2 data similes, 2 data metaphors, 5 data personification, 7 data hyperbole, 1 data metonymy, and 1 data dead metaphor. The most dominant type of meaning found in this study are conceptual meaning and connotative meaning. From these two findings type of figurative language and type of meaning are related to each other because the used of figurative language can make the song come alive and listeners can feel what the singer wants to convey through the lyrics. Furthermore, figurative language can add aesthetic value to the selected song.
