Abstract

Writing is one of the productive skills in learning English which has to be mastered by all grades of students, because it is one way to express the language through written form. However, based on the preliminary observation which was conducted, it was found that the subjects’ writing ability was low. Besides, the subjects had difficulties in organizing their paragraph and developing their idea in writing a descriptive paragraph. The present classroom action research was intended to find out whether or not writing skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Abiansemal can be improved through Tell-Show Strategy With Picture Strategy. The subjects of the present study was the tenth grade students which consisted of 36 students. Based on the result of the pre-test, the subjects’ writing skill was categorized as sufficient. To provide a better improvement of their writing skill, the action in the present was then carried out through the implementation of Tell-Show strategy which was done in two cycles. Moreover, to collect the data needed, the post-test was administered in the end of each cycle. The mean score of the pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2 were 51.78, 69.39 and 79.06 respectively. It showed that there was significant improvement of the subjects writing skill and it was categorized as good. Then, the present research also showed positive responses of all subjects concerning the implementation of the technique in improving their writing skill. The responses were 58.57% for Strongly Agree, 40.20% for Agree, 1.11% for Undecided, 0.12% for Disagree and 0.00% for Strongly Disagree. To sum up, the present classroom action research proved that writing skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Abiansemal in academic year 2022/2023 can be improved through Tell-Show strategy.
