Abstract

The present study which made use of a correlational research design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Ubud in the academic year 2022/2023. The samples of the research consisted of 37 students which were chosen using a cluster random sampling method. The data were collected by administering the research instruments which were in the form of a cloze task test and paragraph construction test. The obtained data were statistically analysed by using Pearson product-moment correlation and t-test. The results showed that there was a correlation between the students’ vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability which is portrayed by a figure of correlation coefficient 0.744. Additionally, the significant level of both vocabulary score and descriptive paragraph writing ability score is .000, which means it is smaller than .05 (.000 ≤ .05). The results of the data analysis revealed the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Ubud in the academic year 2022/2023.
