Abstract

Writing is a form of communication that allows students to put their feelings and ideas on the paper. It is important for the students to be mastered. The students must be able to organize the ideas, constructing a good sentence, and use punctuation well. In addition, students must be able to organize their writing into cohesive and coherent paragraphs. In fact, the problem of writing was faced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Waingapu who could not construct their ideas and make it into a good paragraph. The present classroom action research was mainly intended to figure out whether the students writing ability could be improved through Tell-Show Combined with picture. The research instrument in this study were test and questionnaire. In addition, the researcher scored the subject' writing ability by using the criteria of scoring rubric; punctuation, mechanics, content, organization, grammar and sentences structure. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Waingapu in the academic year 2021/2022. Based on the pre-test which was carried out in the pre-cycle, the mean score of pre-test was 62.12. It pointed out that the subjects' ability in writing descriptive paragraph was categorized as insufficient. This study was then carried out through implementing a tellshow strategy in two cycles. The result of the post-test 1 was 74.63 and 86.75 in cycle 2. It obviously showed that there was a significant improvement concerning the subjects' ability in writing descriptive paragraph. In addition, the subject also responded positively to the implementation of the tell-show strategy. As a summary, this present study proved that tell-show strategy could improve writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Waingapu in academic year 2021/2022
