Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in learning English which has to be mastered by all grades of the students, because it is one way to express the language through written form. Preliminary observation which was conducted, it was found that the subjects writing ability was still low in writing especially writing a descriptive paragraph. The observation found that the subjects still had difficulties in organizing their paragraph and developing their ideas in writing a descriptive paragraph. Moreover, the present research was intended to find out whether or not writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar can be improved through Tell-Show strategy with picture. This present research was design in classroom action research. The subject of the presents study was the seventh-grade students which were consisted of 30 students. The subject in this present research consist of 12 students’ female and 18 student’s males. Based on the result of the pre-test which was administered in the pre-cycle, it was found that the subjects writing skill was categorized as sufficient. Therefore, to provide a better improvement of their writing skill, the action in the present was carried out through the implementation of the Tell-Show strategy with picture which was done into two cycles. The mean score of the pre-test was 65.00, post-test 1 was 74.65, and post-test 2 was 83.50. It showed that there was significant improvement of the subjects in writing skill especially in writing a descriptive paragraph and it was categorized as good. Furthermore, the present research also showed positive responses of all students concerning the implementation of the Tell-Show strategy with picture to improve students’ writing skill in the online class. The responses were 44.33% for Strongly Agree, 44.97% for Agree, 10.21% for Uncertain, 0.48% for Disagree, and 0% for Strongly Disagree. In conclusion, the present classroom action research proved that writing skill of the seventh-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Sarasawati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through Tell-Show strategy with picture.
