THE USE OF TALKING CHIPS TO IMPROVE SPEAKING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 MENGWI IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022

The present study of classroom action research was implemented the use talking chips to improve speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Mengwi in academic year 2021/2022 especially in performing daily activity. This present study was conducted based on the result of interviewing the English teacher. The first step was administered pre-test in order to know the preexisting of the students based on the result of the pre-test, it found that the students speaking skill was low. Therefore, talking chips strategy was the solution to improve students speaking skill. This present study carried out by administering two cycles in which those two cycles consisted of post-test. The result of pre-test 1 was 47.66. It showed that students speaking skill was low. Then, the result of post-test 1 in cycle I was 66.67. It showed there was improvement in students’ speaking skill, however, there was also some students who has lack in speaking skill. Thus, the cycle II was conducted to make sure the improvement of the students’ speaking skill. The result of the post-test II was 78.09. It showed the significant improvement of students’ speaking skill. In order to get additional data, the researcher administered questionnaire. The result of questionnaire showed students positive responses after taught through talking chips strategy. In conclusion, the present study classroom action research proved that the speaking skill of the eighth students of SMP Negeri 2 Mengwi in academic year 2021/2022 could be improved by using talking chips strategy.
