CONFLICTS AND MORAL VALUES REVEALED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN “EDUCATED” MEMOIR

The study focuses on moral values analysis in Educated memoir, specifically the main character, namely Tara Westover. The study aims to describe the types of conflicts experienced by the main character which frequently occurred in the narrations or dialogues between the characters in Educated memoir in order to explain the moral values are revealed when the main character overcomes the conflicts. The qualitative descriptive method was used to explain an accurate and well-organized description of the problems which were identified. The data were taken from the Educated memoir and analyzed based on the theory of conflict proposed by Stanton (1965) and theory of moral values proposed by Linda and Eyre (1993). This study concludes that the conflicts experienced by the main character reveal several moral values contained in the story. There are two main categories of conflict, internal conflict, and external conflict. Internal conflicts are conflicts between her and herself that involve her thoughts and feelings. External conflicts are the war of two ideas between her and her father, physical abuses by her older brother, Shawn, and her labeled as ‘dangerous and influenced by Satan’ by her family. Meanwhile, several moral values are revealed when the main character overcomes the conflicts namely, self-reliance and potential, loyalty, self-discipline and moderation, respect, peaceability, courage, love, and mercy.
