Abstract

The use of two or more languages at the same time during a conversation getting popular these days. People tend two switch from one code to another. This phenomenon is known as code switching and it also happens in social media like YouTube This study aims to (1) find out the types of code switching found in the video of Naura Ayu on TS Media Podcast; and (2) identify the functions of code switching found in the videos. Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The data were collected from two videos. The theories proposed by Poplack (1980) and Appel and Muysken (1987) were used in analyzing the data. There were 126 data of code switching found from the two videos. Those data were categorized into tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. The most dominant type of code switching was intra-sentential switching (70,63%), as Naura Ayu often switches language within a sentence, and the lowest types was tag switching with (4,76%), because Naura Ayu rarely inserts any tag in her utterances. Second, there are six functions of code switching found in those two videos, i.e. referential function, directive function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function, and poetic function. Referential function was the most dominant function found in those videos with (38,1%). It occurred because Naura Ayu often switches some word in English because of her lack of knowledge. The lowest function of code switching was Poetic Function with (3,17%), as she rarely switches the word involving puns and jokes while speaking. Code switching is part of sociolinguistic field that interesting to discuss.
