Abstract

Nowadays people often combine the use of two or more languages in their communication. The phenomenon of code-switching also happens in digital media like Instagram. This study aims 1) To find out the types of code-switching found in Tasya Kamila Instagram Caption 2) To identify and analyse the functions of codeswitching found in Tasya Kamila Instagram Caption. This study used a qualitative method where the data are collected through observation with note-taking technique. The data were analysed by using the theories from Poplack (1980:120- 122) and Apple and Muysken (1987). The result of this research shows that all the types of code-switching and five functions of code-switching were found. The types of code-switching consist of three categories, such as; tag-switching with 6 data (7,05%), inter-Sentential switching with 31 data (37,47%), and intra-sentential switching with 48 data (55,48%). Intra-Sentential switching is the most dominant type found in Tasya Kamila Instagram Caption. Meanwhile, tag-switching is the least used type on Tasya Kamila Instagram caption. The function of code-switching consists of five categories such as expressive function with 33 data (37,93%), referential function with 28 data (32,19%), metalinguistic function with 11 data (12,64%), directive function with 9 data (10,34%), and phatic function with 6 data (6,90%). There was no data of code-switching with poetic function found in the data. The most dominant functions found in Tasya Kamila Instagram Caption are expressive function. While, phatic function is the lowest occurrence used in Tasya Kamila Instagram caption.
