AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE USED IN THOMAS HARDY’S POEMS

Figurative language is often used in poems. This helps the poem writer to express his feeling by using some variant of languages and make the song sounds interesting. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and to analyze the meaning of the figurative language used inThomas Hardy’s poems . The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) used to identify the types of figurative language and theory proposed by Leech (1974) used to analyze the meaning of figurative language.The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The result shows there are 5 types of figurative language used in the Thomas Hardys poems. They are;simile, metaphor, Personification, Synecdoche, Hyperbole. There were found 19 sentences identified using those fivetypes of figurative language such as; simile is 9 or 47%, metaphor is 1or 5,2%,personification is 3 or21%, hyperbole is 2 or10%, synecdoche is 4or 15%, The dominant figurative language are used in Thomas Hardy poems issimile 9 or 21%, with the total of number items while the least figurative language that are used in Thomas Hardy poems.The result shows there are two types of meaning used in of Thomas Hardy’s poems , such are; connotative meaning and conceptual meaning. It can be indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the poems is. The meaning of figurative language is also stated clearly.
