Abstract

For English languange learners, speaking is the most crucial skill. The objective of the study was to find out wheter there is any correlation between grammar mastery and speaking ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMK Pariwisata Kertayasa in academic year 2022/2023. The research methodology was correlation research, the researcher want to know the correlation between students’ grammar mastery and speaking ability. The samples of the research consisted of 30 students which were chosen by means of a simple random sampling method with lottery system. The data were collected through administering the research instruments which were multiple-choice items for grammar mastery and performance test for speaking ability. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation and t-test. The results showed that there was a correlation between the students’ grammar mastery and speaking ability which portrayed by a figure of correlation coefficient 0.552. Additionally, the significant level of both grammar mastery score and apeaking ability score are .000, which means it is smaller than .05 (.000 ≤ .05). The results of the data analysis clearly revealed the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there is a significant correlation between grammar mastery and speaking ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMK Pariwisata Kertayasa in academic year 2022/2023.
