Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important English skills and becomes an important part of the curriculum in language teaching. Preliminary research showed that most of class X MIA 3 students at SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 faced speaking problems, especially grammar, fluency, and comprehension. Moreover, the research objective was to find out whether or not the speaking skill of the tenth-grade students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through think pair share combined with picture. The research design was classroom action research. The subjects of the study were X MIA 3 class of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar which consisted of 34 students. Based on the result of the pre-test which was administered in the pre-cycle, it was found that the subjects had low in speaking skill. The mean score of the pre-test was 62.64. In solving the problem faced by the subjects of the study, the present study was conducted by implementing think pair share technique combined with picture. The result of the post-test in each cycle showed that there was significant improvement of the subjects’ speaking skill after being treated by think pair share combined with picture. The mean score of the posttest 1 was 73.38 and the mean score of the post-test 2 was 80.14. Furthermore, this present research showed that there were positive responses concerning the implementation of think pair share combined with picture to improve subjects’ speaking skill. In conclusion, the present classroom action research proved that speaking skill of the tenth-grade students of SMA (SLUA) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2021/2022 can be improved through think pair share combined with picture.
